Working weekend 25-26th January

Saturday and Sunday 24th/25th January saw a good team of guys and gals working on 5199 and 6880. The main objective was to get the frames of 5199 cleaned up and painted inside and out, with black (outside) and red (inside). The job was completed and work progressed to other areas. The journals on the driving wheel sets were cleaned up and made ready for fitting of the axle-boxes. These are currently

January Update

A huge thank you to all who have responded to the appeal for funds to help finish the 10 year overhaul on 5199. We're not there yet, so if you're thinking of a loan or share or a donation, I'd still be pleased to hear from you. To help save money and allow some volunteer input into the final push on the overhaul, we plan to have working weekends over the next few months and a working week to finally

October News

The overhaul of 5199 continues, with plenty of jobs done and a lot more to be done. The major work on the boiler is almost completed, including the replacement of the lower outer side sheets and all the corner patches. The Llangollen boilersmiths have done a superb job. The tubes have been delivered to Llangollen and the installation should start in the next few weeks, once the boiler is turned right

5199 Overhaul News & Shareholder Appeal

Thank you for visiting the 5199 website,I know it has been a while since we had any web updates, but I now have more time available so this should be the first of our regular updates. As you may know, 5199 is now in the middle of her 10 year overhaul at the Llangollen Railway workshops. Since she was first returned to steam at Llangollen, back in early 2003, she has spent nearly 5 years based there,

5199 Saves The Day!

On the 18th & 19th of February, Thomas came to play at Churnet. Unfortunately Thomas isn't strong enough to haul the normal passenger services and so 44767 George Stephenson was rostered to operate these, however following a failure he/she was withdrawn from service forcing 5199 to save the day!5199 stepping in to help Thomas at Leekbrook Junction.I was one of the rostered Crossing Keepers at Cheddleton

5199 AGM

Saturday 17th September saw the 5199 AGM of 2011 held at the CVR. The Shareholders were invited for free travel on the CVR for the day behind their loco, and the AGM was held on the 11:10 departure from Kingsley & Froghall in the lines recently restored FK which was reserved for the group. A Grand Day Out

What a fantastic day we all had on the 30th July. The sun came out, and 5199 was looking very clean and polished thanks to the CVR volunteer effort during the week. Two trips to Cauldon Lowe and back were sampled before the final farewell photo opportunity.5199 and invited membershipI hope that all of you that attended enjoyed the sight and sound of 5199 attacking the bank ( which rises higher than

July Update

Sorry for the lack of news but have been rather busy with work, so haven't been down to CVR as much as I would have liked. The last update mentioned the expansion links, well these went off to Tyseley to be refurbished, but a call from Bob told us something we didn’t really want to hear though there is nothing we could do about it. It would appear one set of the expansion links is of a 2800,

May Update

Jon Kerr and I went down to the CVR to do a day in the shed on Friday 27th May to help the railway prepare for the Bank Holiday ahead. First job started by Gregg was to drill out the holes for a set of new brake blocks for 5199.Drilling the holes in one of the brake blocks (W Naylor) We worked out some basic measurements and Chris Simcock centre-punched the remaining 5x blocks. After making a couple

5199 in the News

Leafing through the various railway magazines in my local library WH Smith I noticed a large number of sightings our very own 5199! Steam Railway Mag has a picture of her in the gallery section, an arty shot of the bunker in Boltons Copperworks, taken by Les Nixon from a broken window. Heritage Railway Mag then has a half a page picture of her storming up the 1in 59 towards Bradnop in glorious sunshine,

2nd April 2011 (Updated 10/04/11)

Saturday the 2nd of April was a superb day for 5199, and will remain long in the memory for a number of people from CVR.On shed being prepared for her special run. (W. Naylor) A specially chartered train from London came to the CVR. With the Stoke mainline connection not in place yet though, this was achieved by stopping the train at Stoke-on-Trent and then transporting over 450 people to Froghall

28th March 2011

Just a small update. Jon Kerr and I went down to the CVR on the 19th of March, and with Chris Meadowcroft spent a bit of time cleaning her up. Jon Lockett, who was on next day, came down to oil her up in the afternoon. It was a shame we didn't see her on the Sunday, as she must of looked dam good with her Copper and brass shining in the sun. The Vacuum system is reported to be well up to mark going

A bit of history was made and a few firsts last weekend, February 26/27.5199 restarts at Threshing Barn unassisted. W. Hank and I spent some time on 5199 on Sunday by ourselves, though we still enjoyed it. Hank managed to get a few nuts and bolts tightened up, and checked out as well as fit a bracket. Still quite a few cosmetic bits to finish off though. I managed to get the top of boiler flatted back and painted in undercoat. Members of CVR's MPD are hoping to finish her sometime during the week.We also got to watch

January 2011

Happy New Year, hope everyone had a good Christmas break. Well 2010 has now ended, and looking back for 5199 it has been a successful year overall even though we've been more hands on with than we thought we'd be this time last year. Even though we were keeping an eye on her as we approached 7 years in service, I don't think anyone expected us to do what we have done during the second half of the

I have just got home after a weekend with 5199. I can confirm she has now returned to service, and is to work all the remaining CVR trains for 2010.Despite all this bad weather, I still risked the drive down to Cheddleton on Saturday night from my mum’s. However, after being tipped off by Will who was already at CVR, the couple of feet of snow that had built up around my car in Southport disappeared

Well MCR”s gala is now over. As some of you will know the weather changed dramatically for the final weekend, with temperatures well into minus figures for the diesel gala. Unfortunately, non of the diesels booked to work during the diesel gala had steam heat boilers and so were

5199 Lives again!

I am pleased to say that despite the disappointment of 5199 not running on Saturday (which was probably a blessing in disguise with the CVR’s water crisis) she finally entered back in to traffic on Sunday afternoon, which no doubt brought a smile to many peoples faces. Late Friday night we took the heart breaking decision to admit defeat, and say 5199 would not be able to participate in Saturday’s

She's Passed

Well the good news we all wanted to hear has finally come. 5199 has been declared fit for purpose by the Boiler inspector! Well done to all concerned, and the list of "all" continues to grow as more and more loco fitters come to light. CVR volunteer Dave Draycott is the latest person to help, proving to be very keen to get on with the Job. There are still many little jobs for us attend to though before

9th November 2010

Well tomorrow (Wednesday) is the big day, as Mr Boiler Inspector is paying a visit to look at 5199. Hopefully all will go well, and in my next report I can talk of a successful steam test. Elsewhere, we have had great fun sticking pensioners in 5199s side tanks ( I don’t think there is a law against it). Derek didn’t seem to mind too much, but at 9 stone he was ideal for the job. So with

Well its all bets off as 5199 is in with a good chance of making the Gala. First the Boiler. The mud-hole door holes have been attended to with a coded welder to bring them back in to shape, as has a seam on the boiler barrel. There has been a bit of a battle to stop the leaks so the hydraulic could be done. Have no fear though, for these are the holes where steam should come out. The regulator proved

The mission today was to remove the Vacuum brake cylinder at CVR's request, it is also a component I had long been suspicious about after seeing a stitch-weld repair inside it a few years ago. Starting on my own and getting no where fast with some welded on bolts, it became obvious that the Gas Spanner would be the only option. 5 minutes of this soon saw 7x troublesome bolts removed, and

Chris and Mark from the CVR, plus myself have removed the con rods. This is so the pistons can be removed so we can clean out the bores from swarf that was created when the valves were rebored. Splitting the gudgeon pin was easily done with a hydraulic ram pulling it away from the crosshead, a technique I've not used before, and a lot better than hitting the crosshead with a hammer! Next I ground off
