Farewell to the CVR

5199 has made even more history at CVR recently. Following the completion of the run-round loop at Cauldon Lowe trains are now able to be operated by a single loco instead of the Top & Tail mode we have become accustomed to. With this new loop though, 5199 performed a trial run in the dark during the evening of February 22nd, becoming the first steam locomotive to work solo up the bank since the early

5199 Saves The Day!

On the 18th & 19th of February, Thomas came to play at Churnet. Unfortunately Thomas isn't strong enough to haul the normal passenger services and so 44767 George Stephenson was rostered to operate these, however following a failure he/she was withdrawn from service forcing 5199 to save the day!5199 stepping in to help Thomas at Leekbrook Junction.I was one of the rostered Crossing Keepers at Cheddleton

November Update

Just a quick update this time.Jon Kerr and I went down to Cheddleton last Saturday to lend a hand as 5199 is being prepared for her annual boiler inspection, which we are sure she will pass.CVR Volunteers had already removed the washout plugs, bottom mudhole doors and firegrate the previous day and we assisted Chris Meadowcroft by removing the firebox top mudhole door covers, then went

A Grand Day Out

What a fantastic day we all had on the 30th July. The sun came out, and 5199 was looking very clean and polished thanks to the CVR volunteer effort during the week. Two trips to Cauldon Lowe and back were sampled before the final farewell photo opportunity.5199 and invited membershipI hope that all of you that attended enjoyed the sight and sound of 5199 attacking the bank ( which rises higher than

July Update

Sorry for the lack of news but have been rather busy with work, so haven't been down to CVR as much as I would have liked. The last update mentioned the expansion links, well these went off to Tyseley to be refurbished, but a call from Bob told us something we didn’t really want to hear though there is nothing we could do about it. It would appear one set of the expansion links is of a 2800,

Easter Update Part 1

Sorry for the delay in updates, both myself and Jon have been busy with work so we have been unable to provide as many regular updates. However, our first report is from Good Friday (Aprill 22) when following on from the share issue launch in March, the Churnet Valley began operating its Cauldon Lowe Excursions. For the 2011 season, roughly one weekend a month, the CVR is to operate 2x trips a

2nd April 2011 (Updated 10/04/11)

Saturday the 2nd of April was a superb day for 5199, and will remain long in the memory for a number of people from CVR.On shed being prepared for her special run. (W. Naylor) A specially chartered train from London came to the CVR. With the Stoke mainline connection not in place yet though, this was achieved by stopping the train at Stoke-on-Trent and then transporting over 450 people to Froghall

28th March 2011

Just a small update. Jon Kerr and I went down to the CVR on the 19th of March, and with Chris Meadowcroft spent a bit of time cleaning her up. Jon Lockett, who was on next day, came down to oil her up in the afternoon. It was a shame we didn't see her on the Sunday, as she must of looked dam good with her Copper and brass shining in the sun. The Vacuum system is reported to be well up to mark going

5199 goes up Cauldon

A bit of history was made and a few firsts last weekend, February 26/27.5199 restarts at Threshing Barn unassisted. W. 19th December 2010

I have just got home after a weekend with 5199. I can confirm she has now returned to service, and is to work all the remaining CVR trains for 2010.Despite all this bad weather, I still risked the drive down to Cheddleton on Saturday night from my mum’s. However, after being tipped off by Will who was already at CVR, the couple of feet of snow that had built up around my car in Southport disappeared

5199 at Cauldon Lowe

This is the only pic of the first ever Great Western Locomotive, as far as we know, to reach Cauldon Lowe solo.Yes it is 5199 just entering Cauldon Lowe Exchange Sidings So far early reports say that the overhauled brake Cylinder is working very well and the regulator is very responsive, indicating that the valves are good.  She still needs a bit of running in though to allow everything

29th November 2010

Well MCR”s gala is now over. As some of you will know the weather changed dramatically for the final weekend, with temperatures well into minus figures for the diesel gala. I was there on the Sunday doing a second-mans’ turn on 37 109, trust me it was cold with -10 being mentioned! Unfortunately, non of the diesels booked to work during the diesel gala had steam heat boilers and so were

5199 Lives again!

I am pleased to say that despite the disappointment of 5199 not running on Saturday (which was probably a blessing in disguise with the CVR’s water crisis) she finally entered back in to traffic on Sunday afternoon, which no doubt brought a smile to many peoples faces. Late Friday night we took the heart breaking decision to admit defeat, and say 5199 would not be able to participate in Saturday’s

She's Passed

Well the good news we all wanted to hear has finally come. 5199 has been declared fit for purpose by the Boiler inspector! Well done to all concerned, and the list of "all" continues to grow as more and more loco fitters come to light. CVR volunteer Dave Draycott is the latest person to help, proving to be very keen to get on with the Job. There are still many little jobs for us attend to though before

9th November 2010

Well tomorrow (Wednesday) is the big day, as Mr Boiler Inspector is paying a visit to look at 5199. Hopefully all will go well, and in my next report I can talk of a successful steam test. Elsewhere, we have had great fun sticking pensioners in 5199s side tanks ( I don’t think there is a law against it). Derek didn’t seem to mind too much, but at 9 stone he was ideal for the job. So with

10th October 2010

Well a very successful Sunday to report of. With the 5199 boys of Richard Pumphrey, Hank Fredericks and myself being assisted by the Churnet’s Tony Wooliscroft and Richard Wheatcroft, we managed to achieve all of the day’s targets, which were; - Re-assemble the vacuum brake cylinder and fit it back into the frames- Put the Vacuum brake pump back on- Finish dismantling the blastpipe ready

30th September 2010

Just a quick update as I went down on Wednesday afternoon. Managed to get the balance pipe off, which required me to cut 3x bolts off, not really what I wanted to do but time is not with us. The brake cylinder components were cleaned up and had their first coat of undercoat (top coat to go on on Sunday hopefully, in red of course).  Boiler progress is good with Mark working

28th September 2010

Went down last Saturday to find Chris Meadowcroft assisting Mark Tweedy in riveting the foundation Ring. I am pleased to say work is progressing well with the boiler overall. All apart from one of the copper patch crews has now been fitted in the firebox, and all the steel patch screws have been fitted to the barrel. The fireman’s side stays have now been fully tapped and are awaiting fitting.

Yesterday I went over to the Severn Valley and picked up the new valves (sorry forgot to take a pic), before delivering them to Cheddleton. The boiler has now had all the stays replaced on the driver’s side and foundation ring rivets are starting to appear.   I got stuck into painting the first top-coat of the frames Poppy Red. CVR volunteer Howard Robinson appeared in the evening

31st August 2010

The mission today was to remove the Vacuum brake cylinder at CVR's request, it is also a component I had long been suspicious about after seeing a stitch-weld repair inside it a few years ago. Starting on my own and getting no where fast with some welded on bolts, it became obvious that the Gas Spanner would be the only option. 5 minutes of this soon saw 7x troublesome bolts removed, and
